Last night was one of the greatest accomplishments in Nova Uniao history, Jose “Junior” Aldo is now the WEC Featherweight Champion.

With so much hype around this fight it was amazing to see Aldo keep his cool and do what he does best, bang heads. After the first round it was clear that Aldo’s competitive drive kicked in, when he took the current champ, Mike Brown, to the mat and finished him via stoppage. The odds were certainly stacked against this 23 year old, but the great coaching and training of the Nova Uniao camp prevailed.

In speaking with Gustavo Dantas (3rd Degree Nova Uniao black belt and Aldo friend), he described Aldo as a humble man with little concern for the spotlight. “He’s a fighter, that’s what he does.” He also told me that Aldo was more mentally prepared then he had ever seen him. That was made very clear last night when he took over the top spot. One might have expected that all the media attention would effect Aldo’s focus.

Jose, myself (Lee Hasson) and the Nova Uniao team congratulate you on your victory!
